Dementia VoiceBot - Civic Innovation Platform

Dementia VoiceBot

The Dementia VoiceBot from Thiem-Research GmbH, a non-profit research institute of the Carl Thiem-Klinikum, and the IT company Ubitec GmbH is designed to ease the burden on nursing staff and relatives of dementia patients or elderly people who are single and have a positive influence on the course of the disease. The telephone chatbot is intended to provide an AI-based conversation by making independent calls, whereby the person’s communication is regularly practised and trained. The aim is to develop a self-learning system using artificial neural networks.

What makes you a strong team?

We are set up as a multidisciplinary team with expertise in knowledge and technology transfer from various national projects and, for example, have access to one of the largest and most efficient hospitals in Germany, the Carl-Thiem-Klinikum, for the implementation of clinical trials. With Ubitec, we also have an expert partner for the development of individualised chatbots and other dialogue-based products.

Explain your idea in three sentences.

The aim is to develop an AI-based chatbot with voice output for telephone communication (VoiceBot) for primary use with dementia patients. The implementation of the project seeks to strengthen the social interactions of those affected and positively influence the course of the disease. The Dementia VoiceBot is intended to implement an AI-based conversation using independent calls with the dementia patient, with the communication of the target person regularly maintained and trained.

What makes your idea special?

This innovative implementation and application as an e-health project draws on server-based technology that does not require Internet access for users and offers good scalability. The application helps to ease the burden on the healthcare system and on private individuals in nursing care and can also be further developed to treat other medical conditions and use scenarios, for example in speech therapy or psychology.

What’s next?

  • Elaboration of theoretical basics regarding dementia sufferers and developments in recent years, stages of dementia as well as current treatment options and costs for the healthcare system
  • Research and evaluation of existing language databases and known rehabilitation exercises such as memory training, speech exercises and reminiscence therapy
  • Final definition of work packages, project expenses and project costs
