AI-based route planning for improved employee health and sustainable road traffic - Civic Innovation Platform

AI-based route planning

for improved employee health and sustainable road traffic

Together with the company LEAD Machine Learning GmbH, Berlin’s waste collection service wishes to improve its employees’ health by reducing their stress and person-to-person contact. To this end, an AI application is to be developed that will allow for optimised resource and route planning. In this way, traffic safety is also to be increased and a contribution is to be made to climate protection.

Why are you a strong team?

We are united by a passion to make artificial intelligence a success story. We bring together diverse backgrounds for this goal, from expertise in logistics to considerable experience in health management and specialist knowledge of machine learning. We challenge each other reciprocally, with full respect, to add value for society together by using AI!

Explain your idea in three sentences.

We want to support the health of employees at Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) and Berlin Recycling (BR) by optimising the routes they take through the city. We will try to predict the traffic on and health burden from different routes and adjust the route and staff planning accordingly. Simultaneously, we wish to increase traffic safety and make the city more sustainable.

What makes your idea special?

In this project that is so far one of a kind, we dare to take on a task that is practically and intellectually ambitious, which could prove to greatly help BSR/BR as well as many other organisations. We also make use of extremely exciting data sources and work on our prototypes in an explicitly cocreative and hands-on way.

What are the next steps?

The priority for the next few weeks will be to refine our use case. In particular, well-founded data exploration and ensuring a link to practical application will be crucial. Subsequently, models will be rapidly implemented in order to test the amount of learning from the data that is actually possible.
