KIWI – AI-based knowledge graphs for public administration

Public administration has a wealth of knowledge in the form of data, but much of this is in an unstructured form. Together with a cooperation partner, the Bundesdruckerei GmbH Innovation department is seeking to exploit the huge potential offered by this data pool with 'KIWI', which stands for AI-based knowledge graphs. The aim is to bring the existing information together in order to ease the work of the authorities and thus improve the service offered to citizens.

Why are you a strong team?

For us, the journey itself is as good as the destination, though the destination is also the journey! Otherwise it would probably be better never to arrive. We have a sense of humour. We prioritise communication. We stand out for being independent team players.

We can also build on our trusting collaboration for former projects. The roles are assigned clearly and we know how each of us ticks.

Explain your idea in three sentences.

We want to use technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) to create a knowledge base for artificial intelligence. Knowledge bases for AI systems are essential for transparency, human values and legal security. Artificial intelligence must be used in such a way that the potential offered by its use is harnessed optimally to deliver benefits for society.

 What makes your idea special?

Constructing knowledge graphs in combination with semantic technologies and natural language processing is not a trivial affair. Standards and a controlled vocabulary are needed. The art is in using AI applications in such a way that users get the best support possible when creating knowledge graphs and the effort needed is minimised.

What are the next steps?

We are currently producing a refined concept for iterative minimum viable product development. Our aim is to mature our idea in this process. In the spirit of open innovation, we are arousing the interest of potential customers and incorporating their findings in the build-measure-learn loop.

To implement our idea, we also intend on initiating a cooperative project with further partners and are sorting out the possibilities and parameters for it.
