112 ‒ AI saving lives

Every second counts when it comes to 112 emergency calls. A challenge for the emergency services is that GPS data is not transmitted for a significant proportion of calls, which means that additional time is wasted by the (often acoustically challenging) process of querying the location on the phone. An AI system is designed to help the call centre locate people. The project partners are DRK Rettungsdienst Bodensee-Oberschwaben gGmbH and DRK Landesverband Baden-Württemberg e.V.

What makes you a strong team?

All team members have turned their hobby into a profession and are therefore passionate about it. The project team is also interdisciplinary, meaning that all areas of expertise required for the project can be closely linked. But it’s not just technical expertise that plays a major role for us. We all get on very well with each other and work passionately on our idea – ultimately, this is probably one of the most important success factors in our opinion!

Explain your idea in three sentences.

Everyone’s interest in getting help in the event of an emergency call is obvious – it’s about saving lives.

Those calling are often unfamiliar with their current environment. The reasons for this may be manifold. If the emergency call dialogue takes place without AI-supported systems, valuable time is lost, as the patient’s correct location cannot be determined quickly.

For integrated control centres, our AI system, which can be incorporated within the existing interface (dispatch system), offers added value. It helps people faster, significantly reduces the processing time during emergency calls and, as a result, dispatches the necessary emergency resources to patients as quickly as possible.

What makes your idea special?

Our idea is a game-changer in terms of the technical possibilities in a control centre, thus offering employees much more confidence in their actions and ultimately significantly reducing the time it takes for patients to receive treatment.

The project team is not interested in developing a product that can be easily marketed. The focus is on improving the overall situation for society in terms of emergency calls.

What’s next?

The project team will meet for a joint workshop to determine the next milestones. The considerations and possibilities for system implementation are already closely focused on the production of control centre systems. We have also brought an international project team from the Digital Product School at UnternehmerTUM in Munich on board for our idea. The team is already working on developing a solution.
