AI2destination ‒ AI-based system for inpatient bed management and hospital transfers

Intelligent management of occupancy and transfers at the interface between emergency services and hospitals is the idea behind this project, which was submitted by the Aachen fire service and the Acute Care Innovation Hub at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen. An AI-based management system is designed to help relieve the strain on emergency services and hospital staff through optimised, AI-assisted processes and to increase the efficiency and quality of patient care.

What makes you a strong team?

We are a strong team because we have an interdisciplinary and interprofessional background and are linked to both Uniklinik RWTH Aachen and the department of fire and rescue services of the City of Aachen. As doctors and scientists, we have extensive expertise, including in the fields of emergency medicine, rescue engineering and public health.

We have also been able to implement a number of innovative projects as a team.

Explain your idea in three sentences.

An intelligent management system will be developed that supports the planning of patient transfers and can also be used in large-scale mass casualty incidents in order to distribute injured people to surrounding hospitals as quickly as possible. Health data will be transmitted to the hospital before the ambulance service arrives. The aim is to ease the strain on emergency services and hospitals, provide patients with the best possible care and conserve resources.

What makes your idea special?

The unique feature of AI2destination is the great impact and benefit of using a single system in two scenarios, on the one hand in the coordination of secondary operations and on the other in the context of a mass casualty incident. Digital collection and transmission of patient data and the establishment and use of interfaces between emergency services and hospitals are of key importance for both use cases.

What’s next

We will now share ideas with various experts in the field of artificial intelligence and potential users in order to attract them as partners for our project team. In addition, we will review current funding measures in order to implement our idea in a comprehensive project outline and submit it to the appropriate body within the next few months.
